A thought on the 360 fall update...
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person online who's seen this video. Yes, you will be able to install x360 games onto the hard drive of the system. Yes, the game disc has to be in the disc drive to avoid piracy. These facts are known.
However, and idea stumbled into my head that could possibly be original, as far as I can tell. Is it possible that an underlying possibility for this new feature is Micrisoft's attempt to compete with the larger-capacity blu-ray discs of the Playstation 3? Obviously, Playstation 3's blu-ray disc drive allows for a higher capacity disc than the xbox 360's standard DVD drive. This gives Sony's machine the ability to feature added content and the such. While the need for a higher capacity disc may not be evident now, perhaps future titles will utilize the blu-ray's increased size to a further degree. We have already seen that multi-platformers that come to Playstation 3 AFTER xbox 360 typically contain a wealth of added content. Take Bioshock's new "Survivor" mode and trophy system, for example. My thought is that xbox 360 games in the future may ship with 2 discs. One for the install, and the other for the actual game. Maybe the install disc could include things like tracks or cars for racing games, multiplayer maps for shooters, or songs for rhythm games. Then, the actual game disc could be used for game mechanics only, making for a smoother or even prettier game. If extras could be simply installed to the machine itself, space on the actual game disc could be saved.
Please, share your thoughts on this.

Say whatever the hell you want. Go ahead. Let it rip. I guess it would help if your comment held dome degree of relevance to the actual blog post to which you are commenting, but that isn't set in stone. If you clicked the "add comment" button with nothing in mind, you could always go with, "I'm so jealous of the total hardass that runs this blog because he's such a badass and I want to be him someday. Or don't. As I've said, it's up to you.

They will never be able to stop piracy, there is always a very simple way around it. Piracy on the 360 and Wii are huge right now, and installing a game to the HD would make it even EASIER to pirate. If they are smart, they will leave it disc based, because it is much harder to mod a 360 with a chip currently, but if it goes to all HD mode, a simple patch can be installed and therefore bypass any cdcheck needed.
ReplyDeletewell xbox isnt going to make games that have to install to the harddrive for the simple fact that the harddrives arent standard and the xbox arcade doesnt even have a harddrive. teh advantage for installing a game to the harddrive im guessing is supper fast and maybe even no loading times. the ps3 has to install to its harddrive because even tho the bluray holds 10x more they read like 8x slower so games like mgs4 install to the hd to cut the loading times.
ReplyDeleteand extras that are added to games are usually to make up for the fact that the game came out on ps3 way after it did on xbox. things like rules and awards systems dont take up very much room compared to the rest of the game. think about it, not only was the conquest mode for bf small enough to dl over xbl but what did it take, like 5 min? the only game that has really used all the space in the bluray is mgs4 and mostely because it has like 180min of fmv's.
it seems like loading times are the only advantage to "installing" the game on the hd.
Well, honestly I'm saying this will be a good thing. Having the game pre installed will at least cut down load times a bit. As far as Ps3 Bluray.. it hasn't given much of an edge to Sony's games... I guess they should have considered making a collection of titles that was worth playing.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, back to the topic at hand. Yes I agree that MS will start publishing titles that require download. Theres no question really. They've already expanded the Pro hard drive to 60G, and as for the arcade console... well let's just say that it'd be dumb to not encourage the gamer to purchase that hard drive after all. That's business... and that's why Microsoft can buy and sell us all.
